Precise BioMatch® Mobile powers Huawei Honor 10 with ultrasound fingerprint sensor
In spring 2018, Huawei launched Honor 10 that features cutting edge fingerprint technology, including an ultrasound under-glass fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm Technologies and Precise Biometrics’ fingerprint software for smartphones, Precise BioMatch Mobile.
New fingerprint sensor technologies such as ultrasound and optical are being introduced in high-end smartphones as they deliver greater convenience and security of identity authentication. Unlike capacitive sensors, these sensors can read through display and glass and support slick smartphone designs with user-friendly edge-to-edge displays as they can be placed under the display or cover glass. The cost of optical and ultrasound sensors is not directly correlated to their size, as in the case for capacitive sensors, making it possible to use larger sensors. A larger sensor captures more fingerprint data, which in turn gives a better biometric performance and further increases user experience. Larger sensors also open up for simultaneous authentication using two or more fingers, adding an extra layer of security to the authentication process. Capacitive sensors also require a cut-out in the glass, which is costly. Removing the need for sensor cut-outs by placing an ultrasound or optical sensor under the glass consequently lowers the production costs, without compromising on performance.
The benefits of optical and ultrasound fingerprint sensors are many, but one of the challenges with these new sensor technologies is that the images they produce are often not as clear as those captured by capacitive sensors.
