Log-in with a selfie – boost UX and security of digital services – interview with Senior Business Developer, Ermin Kosovac

Earlier this year Precise launched its new product, Precise YOUNiQ which simplifies people’s everyday lives by making digital onboarding and log-in to digital services convenient and secure. Ermin Kosovac, Senior Business Developer and product owner for Precise YOUNiQ shares his insight around some of the challenges organizations are facing today for onboarding customers to their digital services and the trends for identifying and verifying digital identity.

Tell us about the technology trends that you see in identifying and verifying digital identity

One of the major trends in recent years has been the adoption of mobile technology and the related development of biometric solutions that work with the small biometric sensors and cameras embedded in mobile phones. I was particularly excited to join Precise earlier this year as I can see that digital identity and biometrics is a really special area that will be very beneficial for everyone – societies, companies and users – as we all engage with digital transformation around the world.

What challenges are organizations facing today for onboarding customers to their digital services?

Over the past four months I’ve been working closely with our clients to understand the challenges organizations face when they are onboarding their customers for digital services. A key area to overcome is that of ‘abandoned applicants’ who find the process of enrolling too inconvenient, for example complicated or cumbersome online tools or even having to present themselves in person at a particular place in order to provide identification, e.g. going to a branch to open a bank account. More efficient ways of converting these potential customers to onboarded customers are needed, especially for new, younger audiences.

At the same time it is essential to meet regulatory compliance. Banks and other financial institutions must comply with Know Your Customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) regulation. In addition, we now also see people using different services such as Airbnb where payments need to be transferred between two individuals securely via platforms enabled by different solution providers. And of course, there are also challenges around age verification, e.g. when purchasing alcohol or tobacco and for betting. I can also see there are challenges for sharing economies where you use platforms to share cars etc and where it is important that you identify yourself and establish a qualified level of trust that a person really is who they claim to be. What’s needed is digital onboarding as well as verification of digital identity at log-in that’s both easy and secure. Methods such as log-in through social media, while convenient, simply aren’t enough to ensure the required levels of security.

How can biometrics help to solve the challenges?

Today users select passwords that are usually easy to remember, the typical 1234…but passwords that are easy to remember are also easy to hack, easy to lose. Tokens can be easily borrowed or stolen. Biometric features are unique, less inconvenient and offer a positive user experience. They offer a more user-centric approach with convenience for the end user and for businesses, they enable greater efficiency for digital onboarding. Biometrics add a layer of security into the chain of trust, it’s a new cornerstone.

Can you explain how Precise YOUNiQ works for onboarding and log-in to digital services?

Well first of all, it’s super easy and very highly secure. PreciseYOUNiQ allows a person to log-in to digital services by just taking a selfie. Yes, it really is that simple!

When onboarding using Precise YOUNiQ we manage all the KYC requirements as the solution combines extracting data from a document such as an individual’s passport, national ID or driver’s license with machine learning technology. Using OCR technology, the information and document are authenticated using powerful algorithms. Then the photo from the document is matched to a selfie that the individual takes with their mobile phone. This confirms that the individual who ha
s provided the identity document and selfie is in fact the person that they claim to be. And of course, subsequent log-ins are just as easy – when the selfie is verified to the image used for onboarding, you’re good to go!

All of this is done totally online and digitally so it makes the entire onboarding process and log-in user-friendly; it’s simple, fast and secure. For our clients, this is a really big advantage particularly when interacting online with new customers for the first time as it boosts user experience of the service and ensures fewer abandoned applicants.
